Hey there! Feeling like you’re checking all the boxes but still missing that spark of true fulfilment? You’re not alone. We all chase goals, tick things off lists, but sometimes happiness feels like it’s playing hide-and-seek.
But what if there’s a secret key hidden in plain sight? Only Three simple yet powerful questions that unlock the door to your deepest desires and what truly matters to you? We often forget to stop from daily race and actually ask ourselves what a good life even means, let alone how to achieve it.
So, with this blog I want to share with you a way to ditch the confusion and embark on a journey of self-discovery? Get ready, because these questions might just change your perspective…
The Idea of ‘3 Most important Questions to ask yourself’ is by Vishen Lakhiani. Vishen is a Malaysian-Indian entrepreneur, author, and speaker. He is the founder and CEO of Mindvalley.
It’s about and year that I have stumbled upon his idea. His simple, but not simple, questions stuck with me ever since. Back then, they were the right questions at the right moment. Now, I still use them.
Ditch the “Shoulds”, Discover Your Why: A Guide to Meaningful Goals
Deep down, we all crave happiness, right? Like, the kind that makes your soul sing, not just the temporary “woohoo” from checking things off a list. But here’s the thing: most of us get stuck chasing “shoulds” instead of “wishes”.
These “shoulds” are like these annoying rules society shoves down our throats: get a good degree, land a high-paying job, buy the fancy car, the big house… the list goes on. We tick boxes, climb ladders, but that nagging feeling of emptiness just won’t budge.
Why? Because those are Means goals and they are just stepping stones, not the final destination. They’re means goals, not end goals.
End goals are about what truly matters: love, joy, making a difference. They’re the long-term vision, the unique map to your best life, unfolding as beautifully as your life journey itself. Think of it like this:
Means goals:
Get a fancy degree (because “that’s what you’re supposed to do”)
Make a ton of money (because “that means success sas per society”)
Buy a flashy car (because “it shows to the world that you’ve made it”)
End goals:
Use your skills to help others and feel fulfilled (not just have a fancy piece of paper)
Live comfortably and have financial security (enough to enjoy experiences, not just chase numbers)
Have the freedom to travel and connect with loved ones (because that sparks true joy, not just a shiny object)
See the difference? It’s about shifting your focus from the “shoulds” to the “whys”. What truly makes you and your loved ones happy? What experiences light you up? What impact do you want to leave on the world?
Those are the questions that lead you to your end goals. And guess what? You don’t need a magic formula or a fancy life coach to find them. Just grab a pen and paper, and get ready for some self-discovery!
Now let’s explore three powerful questions that can unlock your true desires and guide you towards setting goals that truly matter. So, are you ready to ditch the “shoulds” and discover your “why”? Let’s go!
3 Questions that changes Everything
Ever feel like you’re just… existing, not truly living? Like something’s missing, some spark that makes your soul do a happy dance? We all do sometimes. But here’s the good news: finding that spark isn’t some mystical quest. It’s about tapping into your deepest desires and aligning your life with what truly matters to YOU.
Think of it like this: we all have these basic needs, like growing, learning, and making a difference. But how we fulfill those needs? That’s where it gets personal. It’s like dividing your life into three giant buckets: experiences, growth, and contribution.
And to unlock the secret sauce to a life that rocks, all you gotta do is ask yourself three simple questions:
What experiences make your heart sing? Imagine adventures that make you giddy, connections that leave you buzzing, moments that paint your world in Technicolor. Write ’em down, no matter how crazy they seem!
How do you wanna grow as a person? Think skills you crave, knowledge you thirst for, ways you wanna become the best version of yourself. Maybe it’s mastering that language, writing that novel, or becoming a meditation guru. Let your inner rockstar shine!
How can you leave your mark on the world? What causes light you up? What legacy do you want to leave behind? From volunteering to creating art, there’s a million ways to make a difference, big or small. Find yours!
The best part? There are no wrong answers. Take 90 seconds for each question, let your pen fly, and don’t overthink it. Trust your gut, because that’s where the real magic lies. Remember, this is about YOU, your dreams, your unique contribution to this crazy, beautiful world. So go big, dream wild, and unleash the rockstar within!
Here’s what you can ask yourself. Feel free to answer your own questions coming during these exercises.
1. What do you want to experience?
Write down everything that you could dream of doing or having that would make you feel happy:
Think about any experience that you wish to have in this lifetime.
Consider your love life, your relationships, and your sexuality.
Think about what experiences you’d like to have with your friends and family.
What would you like your social life to look like?
Assume you have unlimited access to funds. What type of car would you want to drive?
What type of home would you want to live in? Are there any other things you dream of having in your life?
What places do you want to travel to?
What activities, hobbies, or sports would you love to explore?
2. How do you want to grow?
Jot down anything you’d like to develop in your life:
How would you like to develop yourself? Think about your intellectual life, for instance.
What skills would you like to obtain?
How do you want to deal with stressful events in your life?
What languages would you want to master?
What character traits do you admire in others, and which would you like to master?
How do you want to show up in social situations?
What are your health and fitness goals?
How long would you like to live?
How would you like to feel, and what would you like to be able to do in your old age?
Is there a particular aspect of your spiritual life that you’d like to dive deeper into?
3. How do you want to contribute?
No matter how shitty your life might be, giving back is one of the surest ways to happiness. Think about all the various ways you want to contribute to the world. No matter how big or small your ideas, write down everything that comes to you:
How could you contribute to your family, friends, society, city, or even the entire planet?
What will be your legacy?
How will you make the world a slightly better place?
Which problem would you like to solve for the planet and humanity? It could be volunteering or giving your time to specific people. It could be a particular work you’d like to create. Anything you can think of that would benefit others and our world.
Now that you have a deeper understanding of the 3 Most Important Questions framework, it is time to do the exercise yourself. Have you ever get tangled up in your emotions? It happens to the best of us! Through this blog I would mention about two powerful emotions: love and compassion. We all know love, that rush of passion that makes life feel like a vibrant song. And then there’s Compassion. Have you ever thought mindfully about compassion, its quiet strength and liberating power? Let’s read through…
Something about Love and Compassion
Imagine your emotions like colourful threads. Love, fuelled by passion, can be an intense thread, binding you closely to someone or something. It’s beautiful, yes, but sometimes it can feel restrictive, like a tight knot. Think of those couples lost in their own world, oblivious to everything else. That “conspiracy of love,” as I call it, can be fun, but it can also become a pressure cooker of expectations and limitations. Think of someone you love and read these lines again.
But compassion is a different thread altogether. It’s like a soft, flowing silk, weaving its way through all aspects of life. It doesn’t discriminate between good or bad, happy or sad. It simply acknowledges and understands the suffering of others, even those we might not particularly like.
Imagine that person who irritates you and makes you angry. Compassion doesn’t judge them, it sees their struggles and offers understanding, maybe even a helping hand. This doesn’t mean becoming a doormat, but it opens your heart to a wider world, free from the entanglements of exclusive love.
So, can you think of the difference? Love is often fuelled by passion, it is beautiful but enclosed our bound to a particular person or thing. Compassion is like a flowing river that liberates us and allows us to connect with everyone and everything, without judgment or expectation.
I’ll try to take you deeper into these fascinating emotions and maybe help in uncovering how love can transform into compassion and how embracing this shift has enriched my life in an unimaginable way.
Transforming Love into Compassion
Remember that tangled thread of love written earlier? Yes, it can be intense, but sometimes, that intensity can feel like walking a tightrope or similar to an electric wire. We become heavily reliant on goodness of our loved ones, and when things didn’t align with our expectations, the knot tightens, and suffering sets in.
But there’s a passionate spark in love that holds the potential to transform into something bigger, something free and this is what is termed as – compassion. Think that the intense thread slowly loosening, its vibrant color softening into a gentler tone of colour. It starts expanding and loosening or liberating, reaching out to encompass not just one person, but everyone around you. That’s the essence of compassion – an all-encompassing understanding and care.
Think about it this way: when you first fall in love, it’s like discovering a hidden treasure box. You focus solely on its contents, guarding them jealously, hiding it from the world, protecting it from everyone everywhere. But compassion on the other hand is like opening that chest and sharing its riches with the world. It’s not about shifting your love, but about expanding it, allowing it to flow freely towards all beings, regardless of their flaws or circumstances.
From Love to Compassion, this transformation can never be a one-time thing. It’s a journey, a continuous expansion of our emotional landscape. The more you practice compassion, the easier it becomes. You start seeing the world through a different lens, one where suffering isn’t something to judge, but an opportunity to connect and offer help and support.
Remember that person who used to irritate you and makes you angry? Now, with the lens of compassion, you might see their anger as a cry for help, their negativity as a symptom of their own struggles. This doesn’t mean disregarding or excusing their behavior, but it allows you to respond with empathy and understanding, breaking the cycle of negativity and creating space for healing.
This shift from entangled love to unbound compassion isn’t always easy. It requires practice, self-awareness, and a willingness to let go of limiting beliefs. But trust me, the rewards are incredible. With compassion, you’ll experience a deeper connection with the world, a lighter heart, and a newfound sense of freedom from the entanglements of exclusive love.
How I turned Compassionate
Alright, time to share something personal! I mentioned earlier “conspiracy of love”, let me tell you, I’ve lived that story multiple times, in colleges, corporate journey. Most prominent ones being, an instance of 9-10 years ago, one 6-7 years ago, another instance 2-3 years ago. I had this feeling of love from my side, which was all about intense passion, a cyclone of emotions focused solely on person of my affection. I was in my own little world of imagination, excluding everything else, and while it felt magical only to me at that time, now that I think about it, it was also limiting. The excitement and pressure to maintain that identity of a perfect partner was immense, and any perceived “badness” could potentially ruin the illusion, which mostly leads to pain and disappointment.
But life, as it does, threw me some bouncers. Relations shifted, expectations clashed, and the tight knot of love started to loosen itself. It was confusing, a bit uncomfortable in beginning, but it also became the catalyst for my journey towards compassion. The thing that helped me a lot was being conscious about feelings, introspecting why I am getting this much affected by something which is not part of me. Thanks to multiple YouTube videos, Inner Engineering of Sadhguru, Mindvalley Lessons, Vipassana, many books, and slowly, I began to understand that love, in its pure form, shouldn’t be about exclusivity or possession. It should be like a lighthouse, shining its light on everyone, regardless of their proximity or perceived “goodness.”
This shift wasn’t a sudden flash of insights, but a gradual unfolding of realisations and visions. I started practicing mindfulness, meditations, getting deep into practices that I learnt, paying attention to my own emotions and reactions without judgment. I opened myself up to different perspectives, trying to understand the “why” behind people’s actions, even those who irritated me or have left me or are not in touch anymore. Slowly, the walls of my emotional fortress began to crumble, replaced by a sense of empathy and interconnectedness with everyone. I still help a lot of those who are best of my friends and even those who have rejected and left me or no longer active part of my life, I’m still open to have cup of coffee with them whenever they feel like. Many a times I’ve left my things, just to be there for them. If I would have been in love, exclusive to one person, I might not be that person who’s there for everyone wholeheartedly.
It wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows. There were moments of doubt, flashes of old patterns banging their heads sometimes. But with each conscious effort, each act of compassion, I felt a lightness I hadn’t experienced before. The world seemed less harsh, judgments faded, and a sense of peace I never thought possible started to take root. And the joy it gives is something very rare, sweet and cannot be compared. I am also very grateful to few of my friends who I believe think in same way, being there for others and sometimes people of such kind to need support too, so we are there mutually for each other and in those moments you forget all sufferings, entanglements, judgements and drive each other to amplify this feeling.
Now, please don’t get me wrong, I still experience passion, that spark of excitement for certain people and things i.e. Love. But it’s no longer an exclusive feeling, it’s more of a warm feeling that radiates outwards, embracing the world in its gentle glow. The best part is – this shift from feeling of Love to showing Compassion hasn’t reduced the intensity of my close relations. On the contrary, it has actually strengthened them. My love, care and support for people has become more genuine, more accepting, and ultimately, more fulfilling.
This was a very short glimpse of my personal transformation. I know for sure your’s will be different. But if you’re resonating with this exploration of love and compassion, remember, you’re not alone. Feel about your own thoughts, your struggles, and your victories. Create a space where all can learn from each other, support each other, and collectively move towards a world where compassion is prominent feeling, untangling us from the limitations of exclusive love and guiding us towards the boundless feeling of liberation.
The world shouts “Connect! Be seen! Don’t miss out!” Yet, amidst the ear-splitting noise, there exists a different melody, a quiet hum resonating with the rhythm of solo adventures, mindful moments, and an unconventional embrace of solitude. This isn’t about isolation or hiding from life; it’s about stepping off the FOMO treadmill and embarking on a path less traveled, a path paved with self-discovery. In this blog, I have tried to express my life as someone who attempted to listen to the soul’s quiet whispers, traded crowded connections for solo trips to vibrant lands, a city traveller who found peace in a shelter at the city’s outskirts, and cultivating unconventional friendships with nature, some materials and the voices within. Through these experiences, I hunted through the power of being alone, the beauty of mindful living, and the joy of walking on journey of discovering my authentic self, one quiet step at a time.
Chasing Sunsets and Self-Discovery: Stepping Off the FOMO Treadmill
Instead of traffic noises or shouts of world ,my melodies resonates with the rhythm of solo trips, mindful moments, and an unconventional embrace of solitude. My living, with which I try to echo the essence of “Power of Being Alone”, take effort to paint a vibrant picture of self-discovery and the quiet joys found in travelling off the beaten path.
Unlike the charcoal yearning for social validation, I chose the furnace of self-exploration. My solo journeys – Gujarat’s vibrancy, Rajasthan’s majestic forts, Goa’s laid-back charm, Karnataka’s thriving coastline – each footstep echoed my courage to explore without needing a crowd. Even my daily walks amidst office buzz or the rejuvenating climbs on Pune’s treks became personal playlists, where my thoughts shuffled freely to the beat of my own heart.
And then there’s my home, Wakanda as I call it, a home built at the city’s outskirts, imagine this: morning sunlight streams directly lights up the ambiance, painting the room in warm hues. Once stepped outside, greeted by the crisp wave of fresh air, definitely a stark contrast to the city’s smog. Instead of supermarket passages, my kitchen brim with farm-fresh produce, each bite a connection to the earth and the farmer’s care. Every sunset becomes a breathtaking masterpiece, its shades painting the sky in a kaleidoscope of colours. My rooftop becomes my yoga park, a space where gentle stretches, mantra chanting and mindful breathing practices weave a string of inner peace. The same at night becomes the forest of Stars, which makes me think infinite dimensions of what one can be. In this envelope of solitude, self-awareness blossoms, like a flower quietly spreading its petals towards the sun.
But this isn’t only about isolation. I definitely cherish genuine connections, gratefully valuing those who navigate several extra kilometres to reach my doorstep. Their effort becomes a testament to the depth of my friendship with them, and mine in turn becomes limitless. I’m not anti-social, I’m selective, may be an ambivert who thrives with those who truly resonate with my vibrations. With them, my voice finds its full expression, nurtured by the quiet feelings raised in my solitude.
Whispers of Wisdom and Unconventional Friends: Where Solitude Sparks Creativity
I’ll delve little bit deeper into the unique world I’ve managed to cultivate within and around my solitude.
Conversations with My Inner Self Out there: I sit under a starlit sky, the only sound the gentle whispering of leaves. But I’m never alone. Within every thought in mind, a dialogue within unfolds, a conversation with my deepest self. These introspective chats, sparked by solitude, have become a fountain of creativity. Ideas that wouldn’t bloom in the company of others flourish in this fertile ground. They are sparks for writing, solutions to problems, and mostly fresh perspectives on the world. These “unconventional” conversations have led me to new discoveries about myself and the world around me.
Unconventional Friendships: Podcasts, books, videos – these have become my companions, filling my world with enriching voices and stories. Each one a doorway to different experiences, perspectives, and knowledge. But my unconventional friendships extend beyond the digital realm. I’ve had a unique connection formed with nature. The chirping of birds hold deep meaning, the swishing of leaves whisper secrets, and the vastness of the sky ignite mesmerising view, both during day and night. These connections contribute heavily to my sense of peace and belonging.
Mindful Materialism: Unlike the emptiness often associated with materialism, mine is very mindful and intentional. Each possession, from my cherished home to my gadgets, has a story and a purpose. They enhance my life, not define it. I have got deep into understand the difference between true connection and the fleeting comfort of material possessions. Be it MacBook, iPhone, Thar, Bullet, Cameras, etc. have countless stories that they hold.
Embracing the Journey: A Call to Explore Your Own Untravelled Path
My secluded living is woven with threads of solo exploration, mindful presence, and unconventional connections. I try to live a powerful message: “True self-discovery often lies off the beaten path. It’s not about running away from the world, but about carving out a space where one can listen to their own rhythm, discover their authentic self, and connect with the world in a deeper, more meaningful way.”
I am not calling anyone to isolation, but an idea to explore the power of intentional solitude. It’s about recognising that sometimes, the most profound connections are forged not in the crowd, but in the depths of our own being. In the quiet moments of self-reflection, we can unearth hidden talents, unlock dormant creativity, and gain clarity on what truly matters.
My life journey till now, with its solo trips, mindful home, and unique friendships, does not resonate with anyone I know. But it is just reminder that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to happiness and fulfilment. What matters most is finding the path that allows one to thrive, to connect authentically, and to live a life that feels true to one’s core.
I don’t know what whispers of adventure stir within you? Or what unconventional connections await your discovery? Or where does your own path of self-discovery signals? Take a deep breath, step off the treadmill of expectations, and embark on your own solitude. You might just surprise yourself with the hidden gems you may discover along the way.
Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. Embrace the moments of solitude, listen to your inner voice, and cultivate connections that nourish your soul. The world may shout “FOMO,” but you have the power to choose your own path, a path paved with self-discovery, mindful presence, and the quiet joy of being truly you.
How do we actually stop scrolling, swiping, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, etc, which takes 2-3 hours of our day?
The funny thing about this blog is that only around 5% of the you reading this will look through the whole text. That’s because the people who clicked this link to this are the ones that need this advice the most.
If I was like most people in this space who give lifehacks, I would give you the top five tricks to never scroll again and I would write this in really witty and entertaining way with some jargons, jokes, interesting facts, life lessons etc etc etc. and you would leave feeling really motivated.
And I would really think that you would have stopped scrolling.
But in fact you would actually switch your browser tab or switch to another application being more addicted and even more drawn to your phone because this blog would just further solidify your social media addiction.
However if you are in it for some 5 tips or 7 hacks or daily routine, you are going to get really disappointed, since this is not that type of blog or content.
Quick instruction, even this blog is for stopping scrolling, you are allowed to scroll to the next part, but only in this blog, not outside of it.
I hope you are very well aware of the fact that scrolling shortens our attention span. It’s the core issue why we can’t sit down to be focused and productive. The reason we find reading or working boring is probably not because the book or blog you’re reading is bad (including this one 😀 ) or the work we’re doing is boring it’s because we have short attention span so we can’t focus hard enough on the task at hand. We want to stop scrolling most likely because we have something more more important that we want to get done. We want to be more focused when studying or working on our office tasks and there’s actually only one thing that we need to do to help us become more focused and that thing is – Increase our attention span.
So how do we actually increase our attention span?
Attention span is like a muscle and similar to how we train our biceps to become bigger and stronger through repeatedly training it, we can do exactly the same thing with our attention. The answer is Meditation.
Every time we meditate we go to the mental gym and we do some bicep curls for our attention span.
This blog too is meant to serve you as an exercise just like meditation that will help you increase your attention span.
Till you reach the end, you would have done many bicep curls for your brain.
So sincere request is don’t do something else while reading this till the last line. I know I’m asking you to do something impossible and which is going to take lot of your efforts by doing nothing and just reading this. But trust me, you’ll feel very different in just next 5 minutes. Don’t switch tabs, don’t switch app, don’t directly scroll down to see the end and don’t only go through the highlighted text.
Just focus all your attention on the current word, read and move to next one.
Your brain will try to tell you that you need to be somewhere else, you need to watch some other video, see friend’s Facebook or Instagram post or watch other series or chat with a friend or see the notifications that just came.
I understand you need to do other things but don’t listen to your brain for few minutes. For next 5 minutes you don’t need to be anywhere else than right here. Keep this in mind while reading rest of the blog.
Carefully observe that your brain is telling you to close this and switch to other thing, but you stay here and read further.
Anyway you have already done a few bicep curls for your attention span and your focus would have definately improved, event if it by few seconds but it has.
You clicked this link to regain your attention and this is how the people click any such link to watch or read something more stimulating. So basically admit that you didn’t want to train you attention, which is okay, except it makes you somewhat hypocrites because you clicked on a link mentioning how to stop scrolling because you wanted to become more focused and click somewhere else to watch or read something more stimulating. So don’t be that type of person.
More brain curls. You completed Level 1. Cheers. You are doing amazing.
Now let’s get more serious. There’s one thing that we can do every day for just a few minutes after we’ve woken up that will drastically increase our attention span and as a result will make us more focused individuals. That is meditation. Let’s do while you are reading this.
Sit down comfortably wherever you are and redirect your focus inwards. Try to have no distractions. If you are in public place or with friends or family members, for few minutes try to shift focus entirely here in reading this.
Now, just focus on your breath. Focus on Inhale. Focus on Exhale. This is without a doubt the exercise everyone needs the most. We are now going to actually test this for the next couple of minutes.
Just focus on your breath. Focus on Inhale. Focus on Exhale. I will give you counter for guidance.
Let’s consider from here on, whichever number you see, read it in span of 1 second.
As you read 1..2..3..4.. you Inhale. That is 4 seconds. As you read 4..3..2..1.. you exhale. That is 4 seconds.
And this has to do be done 10 times. Honestly please. If you cheat, you are cheating yourself 😀
Remember – Focus on breath, counter and don’t skip any lines.
Let’s start.
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Don’t Scroll…
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Read and Follow
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Few More…
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Come on… You can do it.
Inhale 1..2..3..4.. Exhale 4..3..2..1..
Great job.
You have just done many more bicep curls for your brain which has improved your attention span a little bit further.
Level 2 Done. Cheers.
I remember when I tested it around 3 years ago, I felt kind of weird about it because I thought that it was just things that only monks or yogis did and at first I didn’t really get it. Then when I understood the benefits of it and I saw why it actually would help me make more progress towards being focused and productive. I started doing it daily for just 3 minutes at first. It was really hard. Many thoughts would come up and I would get diverted easily. But then quickly as I did it more and more I became better at it. I started to increase the time from 3 minutes to 5 minutes and then from 5 minutes to 10 minutes and now even 20-30 minutes, where I just sit in my room with no stimulation, no music, nothing, except just me focusing on my breath. And as a result it has helped me make huge progress in becoming mindful and conscious, as now I’m able to actually sit down and work which before I meditated was completely impossible.
I know I may have exaggerated benefits of meditation but those are just some things that are making your brain stronger and stronger. So make the conscious decision right now, to not listen to any other thoughts and let them just pass by in same way you have let other calls, notifications, distraction pass by (only if you have reached till here 😀 ). I highly recommend that you do this first thing in the morning and you only have to do it for 3 minutes in beginning to start seeing a difference in your focus. Don’t listen to your brain telling you all the reasons why you can’t, it’s weird, it’s cringe or any other thoughts that you might be getting now. It’s not weird and cringe to focus on improving yourself. It’s necessary because this is the step in the right direction that will take you closer towards your goal of getting focused, getting productive, students for better grades or people who want to work a lot and make more money.
Try this experiment from the very next day you read this. Just meditate for 3 minutes every morning and I can surely guarantee you that you will see significant improvement in your focus.
Great job you’ve now finished Level 3 of this little exercise. Cheers.
Your mind may have wandered away thinking about something else throughout this reading, you might have got some notifications, someone around might have called you. But if you’ve stayed till here, or maybe you think that you haven’t done this in the right way or you’ve done something wrong while reading through it, you haven’t.
Trust me, whatever you thought about during this reading doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’ve stayed throughout the last sentence and you’ve followed through all the conditions asked in the beginning. And that’s what matters.
Feeling like life is spinning out of control? You’re not alone. In our ever-connected world, saying “yes” to everything is the siren song that lures us to burnout. But what if the secret to true productivity, and greater joy, lies in embracing the art of missing out?
While the world spins on a running wheel of “more,” “faster,” and “better,” I’ve chose a different path. My home isn’t nestled in the buzzing heart of the city, but on the quiet fringes, where the symphony of nature replaces the constant hum of traffic. Sure, I might miss out on the trendy pop-up shops and late-night karaoke sessions, but what I’ve gained in exchange is far more precious: the joy of missing out on the unnecessary, to fully embrace the serenity of seclusion.
Life here is a far cry from the curated chaos of social media feeds. My neighbors aren’t algorithms, but the rustle of leaves in the wind and the distant calls of birds. My grocery store isn’t a brightly lit megastore, but the direct-to-home farmer’s market, bursting with the colours and scents of the season. It’s a slower pace, a deliberate rhythm that allows me to savor the simple pleasures: a cup of tea steeped with wild herbs, a book devoured under the shade of an ancient oak, the star-studded sky painting the twilight canvas.
But don’t mistake this quietude for isolation. In the absence of city’s clamor, my connections with those who matter most deepen. Conversations linger around crackling fireplaces, laughter echoes through empty meadows, and shared meals become intimate rituals of storytelling and connection. The community here isn’t measured in numbers, but in the depth of bonds forged under the open sky.
Of course, there are challenges. The internet can be a fickle friend, access to resources sometimes requires more effort, and the occasional social itch needs scratching with a deliberate trip into the urban jungle. But these inconveniences pale in comparison to the treasures I’ve unearthed in this secluded haven.
Here, I’ve learned the profound art of deliberate living. Every choice carries weight, every action ripples outward. I curate my experiences like a chef crafting a meal, savoring each bite, each scent, each moment. I’ve discovered the power of intentional silence, a fertile ground where creativity and inspiration bloom. And most importantly, I’ve embraced the joy of missing out (JOMO) on the fleeting trends and empty pursuits, making space for what truly nourishes my soul.
My path might not be for everyone, but it’s a testament to the power of choosing a life aligned with your own values. So, whether you find solace in the bustling cityscape or the whispering wilderness, remember this: true fulfilment lies not in doing it all, but in choosing wisely, living deeply, and finding joy in the unique tapestry of your own secluded haven.
Here are the 5 points I will be elaborating below from which one can know the magic of JOMO:
Redefine success based on your own values and purpose.
Set boundaries to protect your focus and energy.
Embrace whitespace for creativity, problem-solving, and inner peace.
Say “no” to the good to make room for the great.
Find joy in intentionally choosing what matters most.
From Busy to Balanced: Redefining Success on Your Own Terms
“The biggest mistake is to think that you have to do everything. You don’t. You have to find what’s most important to you and say ‘no’ to the rest.” – Steve Jobs
We’ve all been there, spinning on a hamster wheel of obligations, commitments, and ambitions, feeling like we’re failing at every turn. But what if the pursuit of “perfect balance” is itself a recipe for burnout and dissatisfaction?
Imagine instead, not a juggling act, but a dynamic dance on a bicycle. You need momentum, yes, to propel you forward, but also the nimbleness to adjust your weight, navigate unexpected turns, and even catch some air off a bump or two. Life, like cycling, isn’t about maintaining a static equilibrium; it’s about mastering the art of intentional focus, shifting gears as needed to prioritize what truly matters.
So, ditch the guilt trip of “not doing it all.” Stop comparing your messy, beautiful reality to the filtered perfection of social media feeds. It’s time to reclaim your narrative and redefine success on your own terms. What truly lights you up? What values guide your choices? What aspirations make your heart sing? These, not societal expectations or the latest trends, are the compass that should guide your journey.
Oprah Winfrey: From humble beginnings to media mogul, Oprah’s success isn’t just about wealth or fame. It’s about her unwavering commitment to truth, empowerment, and uplifting others.
Nelson Mandela: From prisoner to president, Mandela’s success wasn’t about power, but about reconciliation, forgiveness, and building a more just society.
These inspiring stories remind us that success isn’t a one-size-fits-all trophy. It’s a deeply personal tapestry woven with the threads of our passions, values, and contributions to the world around us. So, let’s stop chasing the mirage of balance and embrace the dynamic dance of life. Define your own success, shift gears with intention, and savour the joy of living a life true to yourself.
Finding Your Purpose: The Compass of Choice that Ignites “Yes”
Our lives are a string of choices, a constant dance of “yes” and “no.” But have you ever wondered what whispers beneath the surface, guiding those decisions, even when you’re not consciously aware? That, my friend, is the murmur of your purpose, your North Star waiting to be discovered.
Think of it like a compass. Its needle may spin wildly at first, pulled by external pressures and societal expectations. But when you take the time to tune in, to ask yourself the right questions, that needle starts to settle, pointing towards a magnetic truth.
So, let’s embark on a personal treasure hunt for your purpose, a blend of your mission, vision, and core values. Ask yourself:
What ignites your soul? What activities send shivers of joy down your spine? Is it the thrill of creative expression, the satisfaction of helping others, or the intellectual joy of untangling a complex problem?
What legacy do you aspire to leave? Imagine your life story etched in time. What mark do you want to leave on the world? Do you dream of building bridges, sparking innovation, or nurturing compassion?
What principles guide your every step? Honesty, integrity, kindness – what are the non-negotiables that anchor your being? These are the guiding lights that will illuminate your path even in the darkest corners.
Jot down your answers, let them simmer, and watch for themes to emerge. Once you see the patterns, craft a personal mission statement, a mantra that encapsulates your purpose in a few potent words. This becomes your compass, your “yes filter” that will guide you towards opportunities that resonate with your deepest self.
Mahatma Gandhi: Fuelled by a unwavering belief in truth and non-violence, Gandhi’s purpose guided him to dismantle an empire and inspire generations of freedom fighters.
Marie Curie: Unquenchable curiosity and a dedication to scientific discovery defined Curie’s purpose, leading her to groundbreaking research in radioactivity and two Nobel Prizes.
These are just a few examples of how a clear purpose can steer a life towards fulfilment. So, embark on your own quest, ask the right questions, and listen to the whispers within. When you discover your North Star, your “yes” will ignite with passion, leading you towards a life truly aligned with your soul.
Setting Boundaries: Saying “No” to Noise, “Yes” to Inner Peace
In our hyper-connected world, silence feels like a relic, focus a fleeting butterfly. Notifications chirp, social media sirens blare, and our attention splinters like a dropped kaleidoscope. How, then, can we cultivate the fertile ground for true productivity? The answer lies in a paradox: by setting boundaries, we liberate ourselves.
Imagine carving out a sacred space in your day, a walled garden for deep work. This isn’t about rigid routines or self-flagellation; it’s about saying “no” to distractions with fierce intention. Close those email tabs, banish the phone to another room, and create an environment that whispers focus, not temptation.
Think of these boundaries not as shackles, but as shields. They protect your precious time, the currency of achievement and well-being. By saying “no” to the incessant pings and demands, you say “yes” to:
Quality work: Undistracted focus breeds depth and precision. Imagine the satisfaction of tackling a project with razor-sharp concentration, crafting outputs that sing with excellence, not the echoes of hastily checked notifications.
Focused effort: Flow, that elusive state of effortless immersion, thrives in a protected space. When distractions are banished, your mind can dance with its task, weaving creativity and problem-solving into a potent tapestry.
Inner peace: The constant churn of information overload is a recipe for anxiety. Setting boundaries creates a sanctuary of calm, a haven where your mind can finally exhale and reconnect with its own stillness.
Some real life examples:
J.K. Rowling: To pen the magical worlds of Harry Potter, Rowling retreated to a remote Scottish cottage, carving out focused hours free from digital distractions.
Bill Gates: During his Microsoft years, Gates would famously schedule “Think Weeks,” periods of uninterrupted time for deep contemplation and strategic planning, away from the daily din.
These examples illustrate the power of claiming your time and attention. When you set boundaries, you claim ownership of your mental landscape, transforming it from a chaotic marketplace to a fertile garden for productivity and peace. So, pick up your metaphorical shovel, carve out your sacred space, and watch your focus bloom, your work flourish, and your inner peace blossom.
Less is More: Embracing the Power of White Space (and Breathing!)
In our fancy, “to-do list” obsessed world, the idea of white space – unscheduled, unstructured time – often feels like an indulgence, a luxury reserved for the unproductive. But what if the opposite were true? What if embracing white space is the secret weapon of the truly productive?
Think of your mind like a muscle. Just like your biceps need rest after a workout, your brain needs space to breathe, to wander, to recharge. Studies have shown that white space boosts creativity, problem-solving, and even resilience. It’s like hitting the reset button on your mental hard drive, clearing the clutter and allowing fresh ideas to blossom.
So, how do we incorporate this precious white space into our daily lives? Here are a few simple tips:
Schedule it: Treat white space like any other important appointment. Block out time in your calendar for unstructured breaks, walks in nature, or simply sitting with a cup of tea and letting your thoughts flow.
Disconnect: Silence your phone, close your email tabs, and step away from the screens. Give yourself permission to unplug and reconnect with yourself, your surroundings, and the simple act of being present.
Explore: Use your white space to try something new, a hobby you’ve always wanted to explore, a side project waiting to be unleashed. Let your curiosity be your guide and watch your creativity soar.
Embrace nature: Go for a walk in the park, listen to the birdsong, feel the sunshine on your skin. Immersing yourself in nature is a powerful way to de-stress and recharge your mental batteries.
Do nothing: Yes, you read that right. Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is…absolutely nothing. Let your mind wander, daydream, and simply be. You might be surprised by the insights and inspiration that emerge.
Remember, white space isn’t a waste of time, it’s an investment in your well-being and productivity. It’s the fertile soil where your best ideas sprout, the quiet corner where your mind finds solace, and the fuel that keeps your creative engine running. So, go ahead, schedule your white space, embrace the power of doing nothing, and watch your life blossom with renewed focus and joy.
Albert Einstein: The renowned physicist was known for his daily walks, allowing his mind to wander and sparking some of his most revolutionary ideas.
There are many inspiring examples who show that even the most accomplished individuals understand the importance of white space. So, don’t be afraid to hit the pause button, embrace the “less is more” mantra, and discover the transformative power of simply letting go. Your mind, your body, and your spirit will thank you for it.
The Joy of Missing Out: A Revolution in a FOMO-fueled World
In the age of “hustle” and “grind,” where screens flash with curated perfection and endless possibilities, the concept of JOMO – the Joy of Missing Out – feels almost radical. But what if this counterintuitive idea holds the key to a life truly lived?
Imagine yourself standing at a carnival, surrounded by dazzling lights, buzzing games, and tempting treats. Your eyes dart from the whirling Ferris wheel to the sugar-coated candy apples, but a nagging feeling persists: how can you possibly experience it all? This, my friend, is the FOMO trap, the fear of missing out that keeps us perpetually chasing, never savoring.
But JOMO offers a liberating twist. It empowers you to step back from the glittering chaos, to close your eyes and listen to the whisper of your own desires. What truly resonates with you? What experiences, connections, and moments will nourish your soul, not just fill your Instagram feed?
JOMO isn’t about deprivation; it’s about conscious choice. It’s about saying “no” to the good to make room for the great. It’s about letting go of the pressure to do it all and focusing, with laser-sharp precision, on what truly matters.
Imagine:
Deepening connections: Instead of flitting from one social gathering to the next, JOMO allows you to cultivate meaningful relationships, to delve into conversations that linger long after the laughter fades.
Savoring experiences: JOMO invites you to truly sink your teeth into the present moment, to relish the taste of a perfectly aged cheese, the scent of a pine forest, the warmth of a loved one’s hand.
Cultivating inner peace: Instead of chasing external validation, JOMO guides you inward, helping you discover joy in the quiet moments, the stillness between the storms.
This isn’t a call to become a hermit; it’s a call to reclaim your time, your attention, and your heart. It’s about living a life rich with meaning, purpose, and yes, even joy, on your own terms.
Remember, JOMO isn’t about denying yourself; it’s about choosing, with intention and clarity, what nourishes your soul. It’s about tuning out the siren song of FOMO and turning up the volume on your own internal compass.
Real-life JOMO champions:
Thich Nhat Hanh: Renowned Zen Master, Thich Nhat Hanh, emphasizes mindful living, finding joy in the everyday, rather than chasing external validation.
Many inspiring individuals show that JOMO isn’t about withdrawal; it’s about choosing engagement with intention. So, embrace the counterintuitive joy of missing out. Reclaim your time, your attention, and your heart. Craft a life filled with experiences that resonate, connections that nourish, and a sense of peace that only comes from living on your own terms. The carnival of life will always be there, but the true treasures lie in focusing on what truly matters.
So, the next time an opportunity arises, ask yourself: does it align with my purpose? Does it fit within my priorities? And most importantly, will saying yes bring me joy?
Remember, missing out on one thing can open the door to something truly remarkable. Choose wisely, say “no” with confidence, and embrace the joy of a life lived on your own terms.
